Thomas E. Murtha, MBA, CPA

Tom Murtha, MBA, CPAChartered Mergers and Acquisitions Professional

Tom has been in the public accounting, business valuation and merger and acquisition fields for over 25 years.  Since marketing and selling his own business in 1987, Tom’s interest quickly moved to business valuation, formulating and executing exit strategies and “making the deal”.

Tom obtained his BS in Management at Long Island University. Tom went on to earn his MBA in Accounting at St. Johns University while working as an assistant controller in the non-bank financial segment of a major New York Bank.  As an assistant controller, Tom gained valuable experience with commercial finance, time sales, and factoring; this fostered a deep interest in equity financing.  Tom moved to Tampa, FL in 1987 after building and selling a successful business machine sales business. Almost immediately, Tom began building his next business, Accutax Services, Inc.—a tax and consulting practice in Tampa.

In 1999, after successfully building and then selling Accutax, Tom joined a CPA practice in a small town just south of Sarasota, Florida. He passed the CPA exam, receiving recognition from the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and mention in the CPA Today magazine for scoring the 4th highest score in the state of Florida for that exam date.

Tom’s passion for mergers and acquisitions lead to his obtaining his certification as a Certified Valuation Analyst, a credential which allowed him to enter the field of business valuation as an expert. Tom has valued hundreds of businesses over the past 20 years, in many industries including construction, food service and restaurants, manufacturing, development companies, family limited partnerships, golf courses and real estate holding companies.

During this time, Tom worked with many companies matching buyers and sellers for merger or acquisition opportunities.  Tom has completed many deals on both the buy-side and the sell-side for a plethora of business-types ranging from HVAC, plumbing, and electric to grocery stores, restaurants, and security guard services.

Tom recently earned his designation as a Chartered Merger and Acquisition Professional (CMAP), a prestigious credential awarded by the Middle Market Investment Banking Association. Obtaining this credential requires significant knowledge, experience and expertise in the field of investment banking, as well as passing a proctored exam.

Tom is a member of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts and the Middle Market Investment Banking Association. Tom has served on many community non-profit boards including the YMCA advisory board and is a past president of the Placida Rotary Club.

Tom lives in beautiful Placida, Florida with his wife Patti, a physician assistant, and their two rather large dogs, Layla and Moose, both rescue animals. Tom and Patti are active in mountaineering and spend their free time planning trips and hiking and climbing throughout the United States in their quest to reach the high point of all 50 states. To date they have summited the highpoints of 40 states.
